Doctrine of Incarnation
“In most religions the holiest men are those who are most separated from culture and sinners. They live as monks and the like in remote areas, away from average people. Conversely, Jesus Christ came into the mess of human history and spent time in community with believers and unbelievers alike. Subsequently, religious people who separated themselves from sinner and cultures were prone to...

Sneaking Past Watchful Dragons
From an interview with Dustin Kensrue:
“It would be hard for me to say who’s influenced the way I write, but as far as the way I think, C. S. Lewis is pretty huge in shaping me. I think I responded to a lot of his work because my brain is so analytical. I like that Lewis’s logic was clean and sharp, and that he wanted to think about faith and communicate it in a clear way,...

Thank you Jesus for letting me pass my math class
I finally man'ed up.
Guys, I’m really excited.
After weeks of praying about this person. Agonizing day after day about whether or not to ask the question. I finally did it. Mark Driscoll tells us that real men take charge and today, I decided to be a man.
I, Leo Jeng, finally asked……………..

M’noh yes, my tumblr. Been a while since I wrote in this thing but here goes:
I realize that it’s literally been a year since I graduated from UCLA. Since then, life has been….busy. As some may know, I started attending Evergreen church last August. I currently play on the worship team twice a month (which was a bigger commitment than I thought since I need to play drums for both services,...

Answered prayer about a friend
One of my friends recently told me he’d stopped smoking weed. It wasn’t the first time he told me that and to be honest, I wasn’t really listening because we were playing basketball but now that I think about it, I believe it was genuine. I think it’s genuine this time because he’s telling his friends to also quit since it’s (in his words) “irresponsible...

WORSHIP IS KILLING ME
I was 23 years old, and already a few years into a fog of doubt and confusion that was slowly suffocating me. I was not unaware of my situation, but my diagnosis was way off the mark. To be sure, I knew that I had “lost my faith,” but I didn’t understand why.
THE…
A year, huh?
A year didn’t feel like a year, nor did the four past at UCLA feel like four passed. Seasons do come and go, pursuits done pursuing and yet still running, going no where fast. Though some may doubt me, I don’t forget people, or blogs for that matter. It is quintessentially me to prioritize, not in importance, but by access. World views and religious views change—Christ is at...
Oh bother.
I’m off to a great start in grad school. (I’m being sarcastic but it’s hard to show it online)
Mr. Chen
Since Eric hasn’t written in this thing for over a year (probably). I’ll write a post that he’d probably write. Here goes:
Woof! Woof! I love dogs!!!

Percy Jackson
I’ve been reading the Percy Jackson books like a maniac lately. I even went to the library to check out the 4th book from the series and I don’t even remember the last time I went to the library to check out a book. They’re that good.
Do yourself a favor and read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It’s like Harry Potter but with Greek gods and what not. Except...

A Liberating Concept
Something I’ve really started understanding recently is that obeying God’s will is not necessarily about making the hardest decisions. To clarify, I mean that just because one choice may entail more personal sacrifices, suffering, etc., doesn’t make that the clear cut indication it’s God’s will. I’m not trying to promote the prosperity gospel or anything like that, I’m just saying that being a...
Idol Factories: Addendum A
So I talked about an Old Testament idol called Molech in a previous post. For those not in the know about the context of that idol worship, typical Molech statues were hollowed out with the statue’s hands cupped together. What people did in their worship of Molech was to take their firstborn or babies and place them in the cupped hands of the statue. A fire would be started in the...
Peanuts
A few weeks ago I started up a men’s small group at Evergreen. Unfortunately, for the past couple weeks only one guy has been showing up. Fortunately, he’s a guy trying to figure out what Christianity is about and was one of the reasons I wanted to start the small group in the first place. Anyway, what was intended to be a small group eventually became meetups. One of the questions...
I really suck
I realize I really suck at the things I enjoy (i.e. basketball, jiu-jitsu/wrestling, drums).
It’s pretty sad.
Meh.

Where Idols Once Stood
A sermon I heard recently stated that our hearts are idol factories. I found in especially interesting that the speaker related abortions to child sacrifices offered to Molech as mentioned in the Old Testament. The point he made there was that people often abort their children for the sake of preserving their own future and prosperity, incidentally I think Molech was a god of ...
A Cost-Benefit Analysis
I was 15 when I bought my first electric airsoft gun. It was a $300 Tokyo Marui M4A1. $300 is a lot for a 15-year old. Especially one who had no allowance and only had $150 from 2 years of Chinese New Year Money. The remaining balance took the form of the next 3 years of Christmas and birthday presents. Basically, I had to have that airsoft gun so bad I didn’t care about the costs.
I...

‘The Bible does not speak directly and personally to you…if you receive them directly…you will misunderstand and misapply scripture.’ -from the ESV Study Bible ‘Reading the Bible’ section
During winter con this past year, Mike gave a hermaneutics workshop. If you don’t know what hermaneutics is, it’s basically how to read the Bible. There are two...
"Here I am"
Here’s an entry I wrote in my journal sometime in February. Maybe if I actually do go overseas, this will probably the journal entry I’ll read over and over again to remind myself why I’m there
Some things that stuck out from a Perspectives lesson were that God is very intentional and strategic in His purposes for the disciples and the church. Jesus didn’t just come to die for...

Kingdom Come
Sometime ago, I asked a pastor for advice on how to evangelize in the workplace. He answered with a lesson on the Kingdom of God. He told me that the Kingdom of God is not a place, contrary to what I thought at the time, but told me to examine the instances where Jesus refers to the Kingdom of God. Namely, he recalled “the Kingdom of God is near” and “Your Kingdom come” as key examples that Jesus...
I like a church with a good sense of humor
I drove by a church and saw this on their bulletin board:

Green-eyed Monster
I’ve been reading old journal entries and it’s just so funny how the experiences and lessons I detailed years ago are the same things I’m going through today. I’ve grown in some areas. In others…not so much.

The next _ years of my life
A lot of things change when people graduate college. The circle of friends changes. The type of fellowship and probably church dynamics changes. Even living at home is different. When you’re so used to coming back exclusively on weekends and now find youself home every night, it’s a different experience. In case you haven’t understood what I’ve been saying for the last few sentences,...
Anthem Song
I bought Aaron Gillespie’s worship album recently. I found this on the back of the CD booklet:
“To you, When time began God had a song; an “anthem” if you will. It is a song of truth, life, and ultimate love, which was displayed to us through Christ. This song is still playing today. Yes, today even in our bustling, busy lives His song continues. Our lives exist to...

10 Things Christians and Atheists must agree on
*interesting/funny article I found on cracked.com
The war that’s coming between the fundamentalist Christians and the hard-core Atheists probably won’t be the most violent of the holy wars. But it has the potential to be the most annoying. Well, I’m going to try to stop it.
So I’m running into this guy basically everywhere I go:
Not that exact guy. People like him....

A Legend of Metal’s Testimony
For those of you who don’t know Dave Mustaine (which is probably all of you), Dave Mustaine was the original guitarist for Metallica. (which I’m sure everyone has heard of) So basically, Dave was kicked out of Metallica for being crazy and partying too much. It wasn’t like Metallica was uber strict about drugs and booze so it just goes to show that Dave was too much, even for Metallica. After...

Season of humility
Got mad humbled this weekend. Maybe its over petty/stupid things but it was depressing to me so I just stayed in bed and watched TV.
On that subject of humility, I think of a quote Jonathan Brookins (the winner of this past season’s The Ultimate Fighter) said in response to Dana White (President of the UFC) calling him one of the most talented and humble fighters he’d ever seen. ...
Everyone wants to be a hero
Many times, I often try to fill the role of a “functional savior” and try to fix problems that could never be fixed by me and should be fixed by the Holy Spirit. Because of that, I found an article on the work of the Holy Spirit to be incredibly helpful and encouraging because I try so hard to see people come to Christ and become Christians on my terms and not God’s terms.
I have several close...

Underoath
Yes. I know I probably wrote about something like this a while back but I would like to say it again: I really dig Underoath. Even though Aaron left the band a couple months ago, Underoath still retains its appeal to me.
It takes some deciphering to get past all the screaming but I find the honesty behind the lyrics so endearing and relatable. Spencer (the main vocalist and lyricist) does...
“The church has been boiled down to a list things you shouldn’t do, and I truly believe Christianity is about things you should do. We spend all of our time trying to clean up our messes, fully well knowing at some point the mess is far to big to deal with ourselves. I think we as a church, a body, a community need not attempt to push people away from their sins, but push people...

ICA: An honest assessment
*Please don’t take this entry the wrong way. I think ICA is a great ministry with good people and a biblical foundation. This is just my $0.02 based on 4 years of being in this ministry*
To be in ICA, you need a healthy relationship with God. That is, knowing where your identity is founded upon. One of the strengths of ICA can also become one of its biggest pitfalls. I am of course talking...
